Like their counterparts across the nation, Portland’s 19,000 federal workers—and more than 10,000 more throughout the state—are bracing for layoffs as President Donald Trump and his Department of Government Efficiency look to trim the federal government, according to The Portland Business Journal. Washington had about 80,000 federal workers last year who may be wondering if they’ll still have jobs this year. The DOGE, led by private businessman Elon Musk, plans to cut $2 trillion from the federal government’s $6.1 trillion federal budget and cut the number of federal employees by 75 percent, according to the Urban Institute. A 10 percent cut in federal workforce in Oregon would result in the loss of 3,000 jobs.
These cuts in Oregon and nationwide are not unusual. For instance, President Bill Clinton eliminated 700,000 Federal jobs during his two year term as President.
Not all job losses are direct cuts. There have been at least 75,000 Federal employees nationwide that have signed up for an early buy-out plan. A rough estimate of Oregon’s population percentage of that 75,000 would be over 10% of the 3,000 estimated cuts or 375 jobs.
