OREGONIANS APPROVED OVER 70 TAXES IN 2020 —
Voters approved 29 local taxes (property, hotel, bonds, renewals, etc.) during the May Election, and 50 more during the November Election. The most common type of tax increase was taxes related to property. Some of the largest tax increases were the $1.2 billion Portland School Bond (26-215), the quarter billion business and income tax by METRO regional government for homeless programs (Measure 26-201) and the $300 million statewide tobacco, vaping, cigar tax (measure 108).
PORTLAND IS NOW AMONG THE HIGHEST INCOME TAX AREAS IN THE NATION —
Multnomah County’s approval of a 1.5%-3.8% income tax hike for higher income earners puts it among the highest marginal income taxed areas in the United States.
OVER 569 FEE INCREASES WENT INTO EFFECT THIS YEAR
The 2019 Legislature approved raising over 515 existing fees while creating 60 new first-time fees. Only six fees were decreased or eliminated.
Of the top fee increases agencies (with more than 20) were DEQ, Dept. of Education and Health and Human services.
