By Taxpayers Association of Oregon Foundation,
Oregonians pay some of the highest taxes in the nation, ranking 5th in average net tax rates according to research published by the National Bureau of Economic Research.
Despite our heavy burden, our state is failing to deliver where it matters most: education.
Shockingly, The Oregonian reports that Oregon’s math and reading achievement scores are among the worst in the nation. Oregon fourth graders ranked second worst in the country in math and third worst in reading.
How can families tolerate pouring their hard-earned dollars into a system that leaves our kids behind?
Oregonians love to brag that we have no sales tax. Even so, our politicians demand more from taxpayers than most states.
Yet, where is the return on investment? Crumbling schools, overcrowded classrooms, and dismal test scores show that throwing money at the problem isn’t working. If high taxes guaranteed success, Oregon would be a leader—not a laggard. Instead, families are stuck paying more while watching their children fall further behind.
It’s time the turn that tables and roll back Oregon’s onerous taxes. Some lawmakers are considering HB 2176 which would repeal the state’s Corporate Activities Tax.
Whatever Oregon’s problems may be more and higher taxes are not the solution.
